Left Door Post & hinge
rebuilding the door hinge plate and post
Remove the old
The area that contained the lower hinge plate had rust-through, making the whole are "spongy." I also had to cut out the area in the left of the photograph which had rotted from the inside out.

Hinge plate
This is the hinge plate. I had to drill out the rivets and separate the pieces. The hinge plates are made of brass so be careful if you use any heat

cover plate
Here is the new cover plate I made. I opted to use rivets to reassemble the pieces but they could be spot welded also.

Making the new pieces
This is assembled unit. the outside pieces is the section of door post. Then the hinge assembly is tack welded to it. Look closely - the inner plate actually extends beyond the top of the door post repair; this is because it has to go up and inside the door post. I drilled two 3/16" holes in the door post and then spot welded this inner plate to it.

I can't seem to find the photo of the finished door post, but here is the other panel that I replaced. The hole fits over a welded nut for the front fender. I cut a second piece to fill in the outside space and make it flush to the outside panel.
