Removing the rear fenders ("wings") and grinding off the rust revealed several holes in the body beneath.

A BIG HOLE.
That's a big hole. This was the largest part that had to be cut out.

replacing the old with new
First order of business was forming and welding in the inner panel, which if did from the outside, then hammer formed it so that it was just barely beneath the level of the outer panel so that I could weld the outer panel to it for rigidity.

Here's a photo from the inside showing the inside panel. The tape was put there before the old metal was removed to mark the location of the welded nuts. As I mentioned, two of them had to be re-welded to the new panel.
